Mountain Biking Pocahontas State Park

****   Add a review
#5 of 300 mountain bike trails in Virginia
#169 in the world

Pocahontas State Park "offers a cornucopia of riding opportunities for riders of all levels," said Fernandez. The park now boasts 44 miles of singletrack to choose from. "There are classic old school hand-built technical trails, purpose-built flow lines, easy trails for kids, and accessible trails for riders with disabilities."

The Swift Creek trail system is the most modern MTB zone in Pocahontas State Park, featuring 22 miles of machine-built flow trails. Freight Line, a downhill-only dual slalom track, was built in 2018, and Blue Jay Way and Corkscrew added intermediate-level downhill-only flow trails with berms and small features to the network. The Millstone Trail features a jump line with some impressive tabletop jumps.

"The trails are well marked, easy to navigate, and a joy to ride," Fernandez continued. "The Friends of Pocahontas State Park, along with park management and rvaMORE have done a phenomenal job of systematically improving the trail system and maintaining it so that it is always in great shape. Beyond that, there are over 60 miles of gravel roads in case you want to bring your 'other bike' for the ride."

Fun set of trails. Lots of places for starting. Trails are well maintained and easy to ride mostly. Typical fun woody singletrack..until you find the millstone area. Cool jumps, drops and berms. Cool-ass jump over the stream! Wish I had more time, but on jumping the stream, I landed hard, and knocked the bead off my tumbeless tire!

I didn't have great expectations for these trails, but I was pleasantly surprised. I rode around different smalled trails and campgrounds before pulling out trailforks and found the mountain bike specific trails, once I found them, they were well marked. Next trip through there we will definitely hit again.

XC machine built trails. Mostly hardpack double track... some hand tooled singletrack by the campground (lakeview). These trails are fast with an elaborate fireroad network to shuttle back with minimal elevation work. The middle DOES have a pump track with several lines. There grn, Blue, Black trail designation isnt really representative of actual difficulty and don't let that stop you from riding everything just because maybe you dont consider yourself an expert. Please be aware there are some low IQ strava$$holes who will mow you down rather then brake check for party pace riding.

Lots of fun. Fairly easy with some obstacles, root and gardens, but nothing really difficult. Great for beginners like me. Some steep hills. Well maintained, and the fire roads and horse trails are also accessible for mountain biking. My only complaint is that the park closes the bike trails for a day or two every time it rains, and we get a lot of rain in here.

Great trail system and upkeep by the Volunteers, parking can get crowded on weekends.

Fun trail. It's a beginner trail. Little to no roots or rocks. As an intermediate rider. It's super fast and flowy. Alot of pumping. Well suited for a hardtail. Loop it with what I thought was the new pump track which is now a awesome pump track/tabletop down hill trail. It's super fast and fun. But as the signs say "check your speed". I rode it on an off day. It's a beginner trail.

Well maintained and a enjoyable ride. I rode Lakeview Trail 1 & 2. It had a few technical spots but I'm also a beginner.

Fun trail. Well marked and well taken care of. I road all three. A good break from the James River Park system trails. It has just enough advanced offshoots to keep it interesting. And very little steep or long climbs. The fire road to get to it was the hardest. Lake View too was probably my favorite. My only critique. After about mile marker 6. It kinda looses it's pop. But all and all it was fun and a well taken care of trail system.

I rode these trails on New Year's Day 2017 and was (again) very impressed. A fun ride, but not too difficult and a very sustainable trail. Connects well with the rest of the Pocahontas State Park trail network, which continues to grow!

Great for all skill levels, simulates the big mountains just west of richmond with easy long-ish climbs to fun downhills with jumps and great flow. The trails are all ridable by beginners, they may need to hike their bikes once or twice, but overall they'll love the non-steep grade and smooth trails.

The new trails are awesome. Labeled easy but if your trying to work on more dirt jump/pump track skills. Ride them! I was slightly disappointed in Morel Ravine which is labeled black diamond. The ravine crossing are not beginner! But the down tree crossings, which all can be ridden, got a wee bit boring. But yeah I'm going back. Great state park!

Rider questions

Q: thinking about traveling from NJ to VA in April for a long weekend of camping. Are these trails something that we could pull our child in one of those bike trailers on ? dont want to make the 4 hr drive with our bikes if we really cant pull her behind them. Any feedback or other parks to camp around VA would be appreciated !
A: Depends on which trail system you ride. There are two trails that were built with hand cyclist in mind and a very smooth, although they are rather short.

Q: Is there a trail for three-wheeled handicap bikes
A: Absolutely! The newish Swift Creek trails have about 7 miles of hand cycle-friendly trails. Come check them out.
