Mountain Biking Luna Lake Loop Trail #2

***   Add a review
#239 of 401 mountain bike trails in Arizona
#8,736 in the world

The moderate length and easy terrain make this trail a popular pastime for campers at neighboring Luna Lake Campground. In fact, campers can ride directly from their campsites and start enjoying this scenic trail.
From the trailhead, follow the blue diamond trail markers north through the gate to a signed trail junction and take the left fork. Continue 1 mile through the gate across Little Creek, a cattle guard, and down the main road about ΒΌ mile to a signed road and gate on the right. Go through this gate and enjoy relatively flat riding for 2.5 miles. A series of short climbs and drops leads back to a signed junction.
The right fork marked "easiest" will take you back to the trail system (Short Loop Trail), while the left fork will bring you back to Luna Lake Campground in a half mile. source: fs.usda.gov

Getting there
Drive 5 miles east from Alpine on Hwy. 180 and turn left (north) on Luna Lake Entrance Road (FR 570), just east of the lake. This gravel, all-weather road leads 1 mile to the bike trailhead marked by an international bike symbol near the campground entrance.

I believe you should reconsider listing Luna Lake as a "trails". We camped here expecting to hike the long loop and were dismayed that the "trail" is now a heavily used, badly rutted ATV road, strewn with the usual assortment of plastic water bottles and wads of used toilet paper.

All logging roads. There is one part of the trail that is hard to follow because it looks like it is never used. We were able to follow the blue diamonds on the trees which connected up to another logging road. There are a couple of steep climbs over loose rocks and gravel but is flat for the most part. We accidentally took one of the side roads and it lead to a very nice overlook.

I rode this trail on June 16th. It was 9:00 Am and the trail was dry. Rain came later. Hard core MTB folks will find that this trail is really a series of logging and forest service roads. The last stretch of the trail actually felt like a trail. The first half of the trail is an ascent. It's not a terrible slope, but given that you are at 8,000 feet elevation it can get you winded quickly. The trail is well marked throughout and navigation was easy. For a short ride with nice scenery this trail works well.
