Mountain Biking Lligua Loop

#2 of 13 mountain bike trails in Ecuador
#7,394 in the world

This is another scenic route in the heart of the Ecuadorean Andes. It's a basic "out & back" 50%
dirt/gravel and 50% asphalt. You start at the center of Baños and head westerly along the Pastaza river
following undulating gravel roads. While we were there they were "paving" sections of the gravel road with
cobblestones .. yup, that's right ... cobblestones. We came across an Ecuadorean road crew consisting of 5
(4 men 1 women) setting cobblestones in the roadbed with hammer and chisel. Similarly to El Triunfo this
isn't a technical trail but a scenic trail. It's no cake walk either; the geography here is pretty tough and at
the point where we crossed the river and headed back to Baños we had to walk up out of the riverbed. The
scenery makes it all worthwhile though as you can see by the pix .... and don't forget to check out the GPX

Getting there
This is what you would call a "tourist route", and is guided by the Andean Bicycle Touring Company. The only way I know of getting there is by flying into Quito (capitol of Ecuador), taking a taxi to the bus terminal and then paying $3.50 for a 4 hour bus ride to Baños. Once there, stay at a place called Posada del Arte and they will sort everything out for you. Check out the website here: http://www.posadadelarte.com/

I had ride in the downhill version of this trail, It was awesome and great. It was my first time riding downhill. This was a great adventure I had. Just remember when you on the top of the mountain you are above the clouds and is a little hard to breath at first, after you get used to it is nice. This trail has a fantastic view of nature mountains, little city's, waterfall etc. I have given 4 star because the downhill trail was closed at one point and we have to redirect back to the street to get back into another section of the downhill. If you planning in traveling, this is one of the place you must go. Enjoy
