Trail Description
About this trail
a fun easy fast ride. One of the most popular trails in Butte gives bikers and hikers excellent loop possibilities just minutes from town. The Maud S Canyon trail, located northeast of the Interstate 90 Continental Drive exit, runs about 2 miles up the East Ridge to a saddle that overlooks Butte and another 1.5 miles to join the Continental Divide Trail, which runs north from Homestake Pass. The trail also features a spur that takes hikers to within a quarter mile of the Our Lady of the Rockies statue. That trail dead ends at this time, but the Forest Service has plans to extend it north to Elk Park - and eventually all the way to Lincoln as part of the greater Continental Divide Trail. The area boasts aspen groves, deer and other wildlife.

Review: I rate this trail intermediate to advanced. The beginning of the trail is an easy slope up into the canyon. Here you have the choice of going left or right along the railroad tracks which I rate very easy beginner, or you go across the tracks and continue on the Maud S. Once across the tracks you can go left or right the trail is a loop to the top of the saddle at the top of the draw. The left branch is shorter with several switchbacks and I think it is steeper, the right is a little longer, not as steep several switchbacks. Both trails are technical due to sand, tons of loose rock and tight switchbacks. This trail is very open so consider doing it early morning or late evening. The views of Butte from the top are awesome! Very fun trail great workout!
