Mountain Biking Chapel Trail

***   Add a review
#98 of 294 mountain bike trails in Pennsylvania
#3,512 in the world

This trail winds along a precipice above the Schuylkill river through woods and open fields. It provides some challenge to experienced riders, but smooths out in the middle to accomodate beginners. Intermediate riders should start at Washington's headquarters and proceed through rocks, roots, and climbs before the trail provides some welcome relief along the train tracks. Beginners can park at the Varnum picnic area and head downhill to the middle of the trail. The trail ends at the east side of the park near the visitors center. You can slog back through the trail, or you can jump on the paved JPM trail and take it easy onyour way back to the car.

The trails on the NE side are more than a loop. I would call it a labyrinth. I'd say that much of it is not well known, since the trails are obviously not ridden often. There are more than logovers. Including gullies with creeks, switchbacks and some very narrow trails. I would rate this side as a 4 out of 5, as some parts can be pretty technical including a very narrow and challenging ridge. Key to this area is to explore.

Nice intermediate trail with one very challenging gully. If you're heading towards Washington's Headquarters, there is a very steep downhill with a 90 degree at the bottom.

Nothing difficult here. Great trail for beginners and the only place to bike in the valley forge park. It very short too.
