Mountain Biking Buffehr Creek

****   Add a review
#728 of 1,344 mountain bike trails in Colorado

Dirt Road climb and single track descent. Fast and rolling. Not very technical.
Climb up red sandstone road. At first fork stay left toward piney lake. Lots
of views on the way. Look behind you often. You'll pass lost lake trailhead
about an hour into the ride. Shortly after take a left on Red and White
Road. It's marked (Google maps shows another name.. Look for Red and
White). Climb up hill until the road turns Right sharply. You will continue
straight. Follow the Double track until it turns to single track. The trail will
climb up a bit, but will eventually be a white knuckle descent down to the
west side of vail where you will connect with roads riding back to your car.

Getting there
Take Vail exit 176. Head West on the North Frontage Rd. Take a Right on Red Sandstone Rd. Follow the road up hill until you see a trailhead parking lot on the left. If it is full continue up hill until you see a dirt road on the left (this is the route on bike as well) You should find parking 3/4 of a mile up the road. Signs say snowmobile parking.

This trail takes a lot of effort to get to, and the top portion of the trail isn't much to speak of, but the rest of the trail is pretty spectacular, so I give it four stars overall. It drops altitude fast through beautiful aspen groves. The switchbacks are broad enough to maintain flow. The greatest difficulty posed by this ride, after the boring road climb to get to the top, is keeping your eyes on the trail with all those beautiful aspens around. It's wonderful any time, but truly beyond words during peak color season.

Can be ridden on single speed with some pushing from Buffer to Davos. For more trail, start further east at the trailhead off Red Sandstone Road. Make sure and catch the last bit of the North Trail coming down the Davos Road on the right.

long climb back to trail along Red Sandstone (FS700) to Red&White road (FS734). amazing views of Gore range and Vail mountain. Buffehr trail tight and winding through initial section transitioning from single to double track before finising with singletrack down to the North Trail intersection (left-Red Sandstone TH; right-Davos TH/West Vail).
