This loop starts on singletrack right away, and right away the riding is tough,
heading up Stevenson Ridge. Stevenson Trail eventually descends to an open
wide meadow and the trail disappears. Head up into the meadow, the trail
starts again at the western edge of the meadow.
After a short section of singletrack the ride comes to another meadow, turn left
and up the meadow and stay in the bottom of the drainage, the trail again will
pickup again and get more defined and you will cross to the right side of the
creek.
When the trail meets the creek in a small boggy area stay to the right and climb
on the trail up onto a broad ridge. This trail is known as Old Bulls Cutoff. Climb
for a mile on this trail until it meets the CDT.
Go right onto the CDT and stay on it to the Anderson Mountain Road. There will
be some tough climbs and steep descents between the sweetness of this ride
(just look at the elevation profile).
Go right on the Anderson Mountain Road and follow it about 2 miles to a trail
marked as Cabinet Creek Trail. Follow this singletrack down the ridge staying on
the main trail. It gets steeper where it turns south and drops to May Creek.
Once in May Creek, the trail levels out and descends gently back to the
Campground. The trail here is fairly easy to follow and stays on the left (north)
side of the creek, but there are sections where the trail disappears. Closer to
the campground the trail gets better. Cross the two footbridges through the
thick willows to get back to the Campground.
Don't forget to stop at the May Cabin for a rest and watch out for Moose and
Wolves.
This trail is a workout and a great ride for intermediate to advanced riders. Be prepared for some short hike a bike. The trail is faint or hard to find in spots so a map or a GPS track is quite helpful. It is a great singletrack trail with good climbs and descents. You will feel like Lewis and Clark on this one! Its out there. Due to trail elevation, it is only snow free in July, Aug, Sept., probably.
