My Bikes 1
On the Rocks (at Ginny Trail) Masonville, CO
A real achievement for the people who got this built -- a slow tech advanced trail in my back yard!
Depends on your mud. Here in northern Colorado, riding in the mud means trail damage (unless it is frozen). Our snowier-than-normal winter will leave us suffering the effects for months after things dry out.
Fair point, Matthew Leo, about the greater importance of wheels/tires on a fat bike. But won't even the best fat tires "fold" under hard cornering? It's the feeling I don't like even on a plus bike -- the feeling you can't trust the tire not to fold on you.
It's clear that many people like to ride fat bikes year round on any kind of surface. But it's a stretch to blame marketing for a prevailing attitude that fat bikes are for snow and sand. The fact is, if you're not riding on snow or sand, I can't think of why I'd want to…
Bike nerd covered just about all my feelings on the subject. Trying to find that window of when fat biking is fun is tough where I live. There's one other factor though -- Zwift has made riding indoors tolerable. So in a winter where the dirt is inaccessible for longer periods (like this winter in…
Uh -- 10 bpm difference is quite significant--ask anyone who does actual training. That's my biggest beef with this study--the conclusions drawn (like this headline) don't make sense with the data.
Winter's tough for me. I tend to ride the lower elevation trails when clear, but generally have to ride when the mud is frozen before the sun thaws it out. I've tried fat bikes multiple times and for me the experience has been mediocre at best. I continue to be surprised that people enjoy it,…

One comment from my experience -- the finned Shimano pads for Zee brakes (H03C) work without modification in the rear caliper, but not the front. The front caliper is too small. I could not find the pads for these in stock anywhere in town, had to order them online. (I ordered the D02S pad).

I'm going to try this next ride. I mean, potato chips are tasty anyway (and I'm allergic to bananas). Hard pass on pickle juice for me.
