After less than two years of operation, Station Mountain Bike Park, located outside of Austin, Texas, is shutting down.
Station Mountain was founded by teen entrepreneur Rhett Jones following a high school project. The nascent business attracted $350,000 in investment for trail construction, and a group of real estate investors acquired land to operate the bike park. Unfortunately, the bike park hasn’t proven profitable enough to justify the investment.
“It can never be anywhere near profitable enough to justify the investment.”
Rhett Jones
In May 2024, we reported that the property Station Mountain was built on was for sale for $3.2 million. At the time, Jones was looking for a buyer who would extend Station Mountain a lease to continue operating until 2028.
However, in a social media post dated October 1, 2025, Jones announced that the bike park will be shutting down at the end of the month, “unless someone buys our land.” Station Mountain is planning one last jam on October 25-26, 2025.
“I cannot describe the feeling I have posting this. It’s bittersweet, I think,” wrote Jones. “I just need to do what’s the right for the investors. [sic] Those who put money into Station Mountain need their money back — getting this money can only be done through a property sale. Though, we will be pushing as hard as we can to source a park-keeping land buyer (message us if you can help)! Without a park-keeping buyer, this will be our last ever open weekend.”
Explanation of the closure
After posting a brief notice on social media, Jones commented, saying, “It’s been like 5 minutes and my inbox is already loaded. I’ll be making a more detailed post of the reason and story later. I have a lot of due explanation to do, and more importantly, a lot of direct due thanking to do.” He subsequently updated the post with additional information about why the bike park is closing:
Reason on the close: In short, the bike park can still operate by itself, but it can never be anywhere near profitable enough to justify the investment, even if I (Rhett) were to continue full-time in-person work; this being said, to get all investors their money back, which matters most, our only option is to sell the property. The problem: It’s way harder to sell a property for a sufficient price with an active bike park on it than to close the bike park, beautify the property, and sell it as a pretty ranch. After 18 months of failing to push a park-keeping property sale, we’re accepting reality, and closing the bike park. After the jam, I’ll write out a much longer caption on this. I so wish I could do more.
And, again, most importantly – we are still primarily looking for a park-keeping buyer. If that’s you, or if you may have connections, please reach out. (We’re offering finder’s fees!)
Until then, come show up to the jam, and all weekends before! It’ll be a great time!
Thank you to all. Thank you.
A 2 year run. Memories made. Money reimbursed. Not counting this as a loss…
