The SAM2 is the one of five eMTB options in the Focus Bikes lineup and their third full suspension offering. Like the muscle-powered SAM, this battery-powered version has 170mm of travel front and rear, and buyers have the choice of Fox coil or air shocks depending on the model they choose. Assistance is provided by Bosch, and Focus reports that “The efficient Bosch Performance CX e-drive supports your ride up to 25 km/h with powerful 85 Nm. In eMTB mode, the motor support adjusts automatically to your riding power. Thanks to the integrated, removable 625 Wh battery, you can ride all your trails again and again.” Until the battery dies, that is.
The geometry on this bike can be shifted via a flip-chip on the dropout to accommodate 29″, 27.5″, 27.5+, or mixed wheels that all result in four different geometry configurations. Check out the Focus website for a deeper dive into the SAM2 geometry possibilities.
The new SAM2 allot frames come in one of two build options. The top SAM2 6.9 build includes a Fox Van RC Performance Coil shock, Fox Factory 38 fork, Factory Transfer dropper post, Shimano XT drivetrain, and XT 4-piston brakes. The rims and cockpit come from Race Face, and grip is handled by a set of 2.6″ Schwalbe Magic Mary tires. This build weighs a reported 25kg (55lbs) and retails for €6,999.
The second tier Sam2 6.8 build uses a RockShox Super Deluxe Select air shock and Zeb fork with the Charge R damper, a SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain, Code R Brakes, a KS Rage dropper seat post, and the same Schwalbe tires. The build weighs 25.9kg (57lbs) and retails for €5,899.
Finally, Focus decided to collect all of the cables and housing through the stem on these new bikes, with their Medusa-like C.I.S. routing system. While this system definitely puts all of the hoses into one house, I’m curious how it works from the mechanic’s perspective.
