Black Girls Do Bike (BGDB) is a non-profit organization, founded in 2013, that’s working to grow and support a community of female cyclists of color. They are supporting rides and events via ninety chapters across the US, working to expand the community through role models and camaraderie.
BGDB recently partnered with USA Cycling, with the aim of supporting and promoting women of color in cycling across the country. According to the founder of BGDB, Monica Garrison, “By championing efforts to introduce the joy of cycling to all women, but especially women and girls of color, we are affirming the truth that black girls do indeed bike! This partnership helps us better accomplish our goal of supporting a community of women of color who share a passion for cycling and we are looking forward to further expanding our reach and impact.”
Members of BGDB will receive a USA Cycling racing license, and are eligible for free coaching certification programs that USAC hopes will “encourage further education and continue to build out a pipeline of cycling mentors.” The two organizations also plan to create a BGDB racing team and juniors race squad to introduce women to two-wheeled competition, and USAC plans to support future BGBD lead events.
