The Avid Scrub-Series short is a full-featured downhill short that is designed with surf-inspired styling.
The Avid is lightweight and flexible, and sports a relaxed fit. The shorts utilize a double weave construction of water repellent treated fabric (DWR coating) that keeps you dry longer and breaths better.
Gear management is handled by two zip pockets on the front, including an integrated phone neoprene flap to protect your mobile device against water sprinkles and small impacts.
Thanks to Sanitized® tech (zinc pyrithione) and what Ion refers to as their Air_Prene material on the back area (tail bone), as well as an adjustable waistband, the Avids are a good-fitting short, with plenty of room for movement.
Up close you can see the bonded details which double as reflective surfaces for dusk riding. A surf-inspired closure system bypasses buttons in favor of laces. Added lace ports store the laces away for a clean look.
Out on the Trail
Out on the trail I was pleased with the durability and overall fit of the Avid shorts.
I had a rocky beginning to this season with a crash that almost sent me to an emergency ward. Flipping over my bike onto a rock garden and then sliding down the slope for a bit left me with major bruises and swelling the size of continents. Despite the nasty impact, the shorts had little more than stains and abrasion scuffs. Needless to say, they definitely passed the durability test!
As for fit, the Avid shorts don’t come with an integrated chamois, but have ample room to fit a chamois or a ballistic base layer. I truly love the waist system, with both stretchy fabric and velcro to give that tailored feel around the waistline.
This is a great-looking pair of shorts that receive top marks in durability and fit!
If you’re looking to purchase a set, wiggle.com is the fastest way to get them. At present, an American distributor hasn’t been named.
Thanks to the folks at ION for sending down the Avid shorts for review.
