Celebrating happy trails with Primal’s Sky Hoodie

For years, Primal has stuck to creating the core clothing needs of the cyclist — the jersey and the bibs (or shorts for those who aren’t keen on the shoulder straps). Recently they’ve made a push to expand their clothing line to attire that’s worn both on and off the saddle. The Sky is a lightweight hoodie designed to keep the rider’s temperature in check during sessions in cooler weather, while still offering a good deal of comfort post-ride. Read on to see if the Sky deserves a spot in your wardrobe.

On Trail

Thanks to Primal’s nifty Cerro synthetic material, the Sky hoodie does a great job of keeping the rider warm without stifling them, allowing a small amount of air to flow through the fabric and regulate temperatures. This allows for the Sky hoodie to excel in a surprisingly wide range of conditions and temperatures. While I wouldn’t want to be caught out in a heavier rain or snow storm, the Sky wicks a fair amount of moisture and doesn’t become saturated when riding in mild showers.

When the weather turns foul, the Sky hoodie does an admirable job of keeping your body warm while you craft an escape route

The Sky hoodie has a high amount of stretch to it, lending the rider a full range of motion while riding. This same stretch also allows the hood to be pulled up over a helmet, though it doesn’t seem to stay put for too long, but works in a pinch when trying to keep the noggin dry when a shower rolls over the trails.

Off Trail

When the ride is over and it’s time to kick back with a well-deserved beer, the Sky hoodie is already set to relax. Though the fabric is highly stretchable, Primal opted for a slightly looser fit, allowing the exhausted rider a comfortable sweatshirt with room to breathe.

A single Napoleon-style pocket is the sole storage option on the Sky hoodie

Free from any sort of flashy branding, the hoodie is inconspicuous enough that you can ride right into your favorite coffee shop/restaurant/pub without proclaiming loudly to all that you are both a mountain biker and a fan of all things XTREME. I’d even go as far as to say that the understated look makes this an acceptable piece of clothing to wear out on the town, post-riding or just because.

Verdict

Primal has done a great job of creating a versatile piece of clothing that’s just as comfortable on the bike as it is off. The materials, fit, and construction all come together to make a quality piece of clothing that is certainly worth considering if you’re looking for an immensely comfortable do-it-all hoodie.
