MTB hubs: How many degrees of engagement is enough?

For some riders, faster hubs make a huge difference on the trail. For others, not so much.

The more ratchet teeth in a hub mechanism, the faster the rider’s power is transferred to the rear wheel. Increasing the number of teeth also makes for a more expensive and/or complicated design, and there could be other drawbacks as well. (Stay tuned for a future article on the topic.)
