More trail work at Wahrani is scheduled for Sat, March 20 at 9:00 AM. Come on out and lend a hand, or at least see the trails. And help us ride it to pack it down.

Over the last two weekends the EVMA added some new trail sections to Wahrani. I have not ridden them yet, but having having done a lot of the raking and bench cutting, I can tell you these short new sections look pretty sweet. They are definitely not easy, as there are switchbacks and tight turns through the woods, with very little of it on flats.

There are maps posted at the trail head and a few trail intersections, but they do not yet show the new sections.

Come on out and ride these new sections to pack it down!

I live 2 miles from Jamestown Island, where the Capital Trail intersects the Colonial Parkway. It is a great trail for road biking. It runs right by my neighborhood and I ride it all the time.

As of now the trail is paved from the Chickahominy River bridge on Rt. 5 to the Colonial Parkway (maybe 5 miles), and from the CP you can ride all the way to Yorktown (maybe 25 miles). There are some short sections between the Chickahominy River and Charles City courthouse that are paved (but nothing to drive to get to). So eventually you’ll be able to ride all the way from Richmond to Yorktown on a beautifully paved trail.

Like you said, definitely not a mountain bike trail, but a good way to get in shape for some offroad riding.

I just rode Wahrani for the first time on 11/22/09. There will be another EVMA (Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association) group ride on Sun, 11/29/09 at 10:00; just meet up in the parking lot. It’s best to ride with some people who know the trail, as it is a system of connected loops and there is no mandatory direction. But we usually went counterclockwise.
I liked the trail a lot and will be back. Flat sections are few and short. There are several uphills and downhills, so you’ll get to use many gears. There’s a lollipop section near the back of the trail system. We first went counterclockwise for a long, steady climb followed by a steep downhill. Then we went clockwise on the same section for a grueling, steep climb followed by a longer downhill. Both routes were fun in different ways.
The roots are not too bad (unlike Marl Ravine trail at York River State Park, which is very rooty). There are a few jumps and log piles, but overall not too many obstacles. The switchbacks are the challenge.
Check it out – great trail!
