      Hi there guys,

I got to ride a new Yukon FX( lowest model, with suntour fork and cranks) today on a shakedown ride and I was incredibly impressed with the bike as a whole. One question that popped in my mind after looking it over however is whether the bike would accept the same cranks as a talons or anthem. The bottom bracket seems a much smaller diameter and doesn’t have replaceable cups. More than anything, When o was a kid, if you saw a bb that small, you stayed away from the bike.

Its probably an older cartridge style 68mm bottom bracket. The crankarms just screw into the BB cartridge which screws into the BB shell of the bike. Most newer stuff has some sort of cup that holds the bearings and screws onto the outside of the BB shell. You are probably used to seeing this newer style BB. The majority of the frames that fit the older cartridge style BB will also fit the external cup style BB so you can upgrade it in the future if you need to. Press fit BBs are also external bearing cups but they are usually a larger diameter and don’t screw in, as the name implies.

Thanks a bunch for the info, Golden.

I don’t have much knowledge about the various bb’s. I just know I had to tighten the cups on my talon when it started squeaking pretty badly.

I found this page on mtbr which has a picture of the bb in question. If that’s the right one, are you saying that you can swap out this system for a system that uses press-in cups to allow for other crank systems like the Deore?

You won’t be able to swap it for a press fit bearing system. They use a larger diameter BB shell. You will be able to use it with the screw on external cups like this. They are typically the same diameter as the set you have.

I think I understand it a little better, Golden. Thanks very much for your help!

As GG wrote, as long it isn’t pressfit, you can swap them. The bb come with spacers, to fit on your tubesize. I replaced the SR Suntour crankset, with a Deore set on my wifes bike.

A RaceFace Evolve XC would be an awesome crankset/BB on that bike.

Thanks everyone for your help. I really appreciate it.

Madd, is that just an ultra kick butt crank set or is there a reason it would work well specifically on this bike? I ask because I’m now a proud owner of a 2010 model year of this bike 😀

It’s the model I went with when I built up my Giant Trance. It’s reasonably priced, and has given me zero issues over 4 years. It uses the external bottom bracket mentioned by a previous poster.

That is a complete set, bottom bracket included.

Wow, seems like a great price for the upgrade. Can I ask what special tools I might need for this type of bracket?

    • #108160

I paid the LBS $20 to install it for me.

Roger. Probably the route I should take.

Basicly, for the Hollowtech bracket, you need this tool. But you need more tools to remove the old crankset. So maybe it’s better to go to the LBS, as maddslacker said

Will do, guys. Thanks a bunch for all your help.
