Hello,
I am new to MTB and after going on a few trails with a mate I’ve decided to take the plunge on a bike of my own.
My budget is a top of £1000 and after doing some research, I am stuck between the Giant Fathom 2 (27.5″/29″) and the Specialized Rockhopper Pro (only 29″)
What do you think would be the better option? To me they look fairly comparable aside from the Giant comes with a dropper seat and tubeless tyres as standard.
I am 5ft 10, 30inch inseam and approx 13.5 stone.
Thanks!

Hello,
First off welcome! Always good to hear a new person is getting into mountain biking.
Both bikes seem like great options. The Giant has a bit more suspension and nicer tires along with the dropper I’d probably lean towards this bike. ( I had a Giant Anthem and it was an awesome bike)
One thing I will mention is tubeless tires are really great. But have some pros and cons. You’ll need to be conscious of how much sealant you have and changing tires can be a bit of a hassle.
On the plus you’ll “never” have to worry about flats on the trails.
If you can test ride both at your local shop, or at a minimum see if you prefer the 27.5 or 29’er wheel. We are about the same size and I enjoy my 29er.
Finally are there any good used bikes in your area?
Best of luck!

Hello,
I have the 2017 Giant Fathom 2 and really love it except for one thing. I wish that i forked over the extra cash for the Fathom 1 with the slx drivetrain because 2x really is inferior to 1x. Otherwise it is a great bike, love the dropper post! I would reccomend the 27.5 version because the 29er is more of an xc bike because it has Maxxis Ikons and only 100 mm of travel. Good luck!
