Im looking for a cheap bike under 300 like a trek, or any other non high end brands, just for around the area, must be able to go over jumps, logs, and ride over rocks, prefer disc brakes, but dont know what bike has disc brakes that is under 300.

$300, You gotta go used. You will not meet the requirements you laid out for $300. You must also be VERY careful about buying used. Have someone look over the intended bike and give it the OK. If it was me I would either save up and get something in the $800-$1000 new range. There is also the Trek card. 6 months same as cash. Good luck and be careful!

i just dont want to buy a walmart bike

Unfortunately as Fishboy316 said you’re going to have to look at used bikes or, unlike what you said, go to Walmart. Buying a used bike means you’ll have to do some maintenance and probably replace some parts before you can really ride the bike. Buying Walmart means you’ll have to do some maintenance before you ride but only replace a few components as you ride. There are actually a couple Mongoose bikes that are decent as well as upgradable like the XR-Pro 29er with full suspension and the Terex 27.5+ hardtail. I doubt these bikes will implode on the trail. I can’t say that about some of the other Walmart offerings but these bikes look pretty good at your price point. Of course there’s always Craigslist but I don’t really know to trust bikes that were “ridden twice and parked in the garage” or “just needs new tires and some tlc”.  That’s kind of like buying a car that was “only driven to church on Sundays by a grandmother”. Of course one other route is to get friendly with the staff at a LBS and let them know what you’re looking for and that you’re on a tight budget. They may have a trade-in or a demo that they can give you a good deal on. Caveat emptor and good luck.

about the cheapest pretty decent bike with disc brakes you are going to find new is the Giant ATX for $460.

Hey dude, I bought my 05′ specialized Hardrock for 200$. (I have kids and a wife so my budget varies depending on which sport the kids are in at the time lol) Slowly bought used upgrade components and I am very happy with it at this point. Go look for a low usage bike in your size man, they are out there for sure.

<p style=”text-align: center;”>I have a Mongoos XR Pro 29er and love it. I’ve upgraded a few parts as I broke them but for the most part, the only part that needs to be changed right off the bat is the rear shock (which is nothing more than a non- dampened spring) I went with a DNM AYO-36RC air. I chaned it over to a 1×8 setup and have a 120mm Manitou Match Comp TS air QR fork on the way to replace the original I blew out on a nasty drop-off.</p>

bikesdirect.com has some non-name bikes that are actually pretty good.  A friend of mine has a Motobecane from there, it showed up fast and he has been riding it a ton.  It’s been damn reliable too, even after being raced on several courses.

I’d check craigslist based on your price that’s probably your best bet. If you want to do some checking though, it might be worth your while to check the local shops. Some of the shops will have some nice bikes that they go over before selling, so your not taking a risk of getting someones old abused ride.

I agree with those who said you need to go with a used bike for that price. However, if you can stretch your budget a little then check out http://www.CheapBikes.org to find a good bike cheap. Good luck and happy biking!

I’d suggest either Craigslist or Bikesdirect. Had great deals from both sources
