      I’ll probably be making a purchase soon, and I can’t afford to do anything other than go cheap…I’m looking for nothing higher than $800…just a decent trailbike…any suggestions?

      Look at the latest issue of Mountain Bike Action. They have a quasi-buyers guide with bikes at a range of prices. Diamondback has a cheap but quality hardtail, the Response series, that Bombadier (sp?) has endorsed recently Also, Haro makes the Flightline that has recently been praised by Bike Magazine recently (or it could have been MBA).

      Happy hunting!

      I actually bought that issue a few days ago…conveniently…it’s actually half of what spurred my curiosity and skepticism =)

      Thanks, though! I’ll go check out those two models.

      check out also the Gary Fisher Tassajara, good frame with a decent parts mix for the money ~800 or less depending on the particular build

      Another potential death trap =)

      Thanks, I’ll check that out too…

      Welcome to Singletracks, HK!

      I see you’re from Tampa…. My wife is from there, and I lived there most of my early life (Brandon/Seffner). We both worked in Ybor (she did for a lot longer).

      Anyways…. I’d put you on a GF Tassajara.
      If you can find an ’06 or ’07, they’re usually on sale for up to a third off the MSRP for that model-year. Since a Tampa denizen, I’d put the GF higher on the list than the Diamondback Response Comp.
      Not that it’s a bad bike; far from it! If you lived say, here in Colorado; I’d suggest the DB Response over the GF Tass, if only because the Response is a bit more resistant to abuse frame-wise.

      Actually, you know that cool rebate every tax-paying American is supposed to be getting this summer???
      Save up some coin now, and then use it with the rebate check and buy yourself an ’07 Gary Fisher Hi-Fi! Seriously!

      I suggest that you consider buying a full-suspension trailbike that you can grow into, but not grow out of;
      ~ pedals efficiently, yet is responsive to rough terrain, without bobbing or being too stiff;
      ~ brakes firmly without locking-out the rear suspension, or causing the fork to dive;
      ~ has a strong frame & suspension design, yet is lightweight enough to help tackle those enormous Florida mountains (or be a rocket when you put the hammer down);
      ~ and have steering that is stable at high-speed, yet nimble enough for the most technical slow-speed terrain.

      The Fisher Hi-Fi is all of these things. It’s the lightest 5"-travel aluminum-alloy trailbike on the market. It’s ideal for those epic sunset-chasing journeys. It’ll boost your confidence because it handles so well in almost all trail situations (excepting serious jumping, drops to flat over 2-3′, and serious DH/freeride). And the Hi-Fi won’t break the bank, either.

      It may be worthwhile to check out Craigslist if you are not apposed to buying used.

      Good stuff is definitely to be had on craigslist, but be wary…. some manufacturers’ warranties are void if you are not the original owner of the bike

      Most manufacturers….

      Although, if you ask [i:38q2xs1r]really[/i:38q2xs1r] nicely, Gary Fisher & Trek have been known to provide deep discounts on replacement parts/frames.

      Thanks a lot everyone!

      I’ll definitely look into that GF, Bombardier…I’ll send a pic of me hurting myself on it when I buy 😃

      It’s good to know that mountain bikers are coming out of tampa…good to know that any nice people in general come out of here =)

      Thanks once again, and about those ridiculous florida mountains…I’ll be really careful =)

      Also look around before you buy and negotiate with the dealers in the Tampa area. I was looking for a F/S bike and found a 2007 Giant reign 1 for 1900.00 in Lakeland, which was 700.00 dollar off just for bein a year old on the floor. Check each of the dealers and negotiate the best price by telling them what they have to beat. The Reign 1 was my choice over a 2006 Reign 1(now a reign 0) for 2500.00 ($1,000.00 off) and 2007 Stupjumper pro for $2400.00 ($1,400.00 off list).

      My wife, Lindsey, is in Tampa currently. She’s a Gary Fisher loyalist, and ordered a Hi-FiGS Deluxe [u:1l8sxz6p]Carrollwood Bike Emporium[/u:1l8sxz6p] before they even hit the showroom floors.

      If you promise not to drop her 😉 , I’m sure she’d be happy to go for a ride. She’s not one to put the hammer down on fellow riders, or take ginormous jumps/drops; but she’s very into just riding, and enjoying the experience.

      Very confuzzling…the bike or your wife? 😮
