Mountain Biking Wille White (t113)

****   Add a review
#121 of 282 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
#7,398 in the world

T113 starts out climbing up the canyon, following old railroad grades. The first 4 miles is mostly uphill, with occasional very technical sections of climbing through baseball-sized rock fields. The grade is never terribly steep, but the rocks make it far more challenging.

At mile 4 the trail intersects with T5008 (Wills Canyons) and you can either drop down T112 for a fairly technical canyon descent for the last 1.2 mile OR you can use T5008 to link back in to the beginning of T113. The distance for either option is about the same (~10.5 mile round trip).

If you ride the entire 5.2 mile T113, you will either have to climb back the way you came, or follow T5009 (Old Sunspot Highway Trail) back to FR164 to ride back to your car.

Elevation Range: 8,000 - 9,360ft (1,360ft elevation gain)

Trail is open to ATV's, dirt bikes, mountain bikes
, and hikers.

Trail starts out fairly mellow with nice views of pasture at the bottom of Willie White Canyon. Shortly into your ride you get a sneak peek of what some of the upper sections of the trail are going to be like...rocky uphill climbs.

The first rocky climb is not too bad. The average rider will be able to negotiate the short rock field pretty easily. The good news is most of the climb to the summit is not too rocky, but there will be sections that will challenge your technical abilities.

I had to walk a few sections towards the summit of the climb because my technical skills aren't quite there to navigate rocky climbs. Yet.

Overall this is a fun trail that an intermediate cyclist can manage with minimal issues. None of the climbs are really that steep, so it's not a lung buster either.

    Recommended Route:
I prefer to ride from lower trailhead to the intersection with T5008 (Wills Canyon) and then take the left following T5008, circling back to the beginning of T113. It makes for a nice 10.5 mile loop that will limit the amount of out-and-backing you have to do. T5008 has great views as well, so it's really worth the trip.

If you ride to the bottom of T113, be prepared for a tough climb back up if you are doing an out and back. Easier option would be to ride the road back to your car as mentioned in the trail description.
