Mountain Biking Treadwill Ditch Trail

*****   Add a review
#11 of 52 mountain bike trails in Alaska
#1973 in the world

The Treadwell Ditch Trail is 10.4 miles long where it crosses Forest Service land. Portions of the trail cross State and City land and the total length is closer to 14 miles. The Forest Service portion begins at 0.3 mile up the Blueberry Hills Access Trail and ends at 0.25 mile below Eagle Crest Ski Area. This trail follows the top of a berm of dirt formed when workers dug a ditch along the mountain sides to collect and divert water to generate electricity for the Treadwell Mine in Douglas in the early 1900's. Though most of the trail is flat and wide, some parts slope downhill at an angle underfoot, which is hard on the ankles. Please stay on the trail during the warm months. Because of the high water content of the soils, the delicate vegetation of the muskeg meadows rapidly deteriorate with the constant traffic of hikers. In the winter months skiing the trail is possible if there is enough snow.

Getting there
The trailhead may be reached by driving to Eaglecrest Ski Area on North Douglas Island. The trail starts at a 2-car pull out about .25 miles from the beginning of the Eaglecrest parking lot. The first mile of trail or so to the first major bridge has been reconstructed with a firm gravel tread. Alternately, hikers may access the trail about 3/4 mile up the Dan Moller Trail.

Great ride, a couple of slippery bits and tree roots

An initial steep climb up an old access/snow machine road, but after that, this trail is awesome! You pretty much get a little bit of everything, a few light water/creek crossings, some technical rocky spots, bridges, a couple stairs. Highly recommended!
