Mountain Biking Patacancha

  Add a review
#11 of 11 mountain bike trails in Peru
#35,561 in the world

Peru is connected by a vast trail system specially in the Andes Mountains. Every valley has a trail that is connecting with other valleys and other villages.

The Patacancha trail it's said is where the Inca's escaped from the Spaniards and went to the jungle area. This trail goes through the whole Patacancha valley from the top of the mountains at 4,450m down to the Inca site of Ollantaytambo at the bottom of the Sacred Valley. This trail is going at the top part through the potatoes farms and then reaches the village of Patacancha where you will see the local people in their daily activities. Then it continues going down following the river until the next village called Huilloc.

From Huilloc, the main trail goes up to a place where you will see a Pre-Incan site called Aya-Orco. It's a beautiful site with a 360 degree view. Then the trail descends again to the bottom of the valley and crosses some pretty agricultural fields and then it climbs again to what it's said it's one of the first Inca fortresses. The fortress of Pumamarca which I recommend to reach if you are in this area. Then comes the best part of the trail that is going along the enormous sets of Inca terraces down to Ollantaytambo. You will be amazed by the beauty and the hard work of the Inca's in this area!

The trail finally reaches Ollantaytambo and goes through the Inca village until you reach the main plaza!
