Mountain Biking Hauraki Rail Trail

***   Add a review
#61 of 387 mountain bike trails in New Zealand
#5,769 in the world

These are easy, wide, smooth, all-weather, mostly flat trails of the "family-fun, scenic, heritage-history" style of ride.

It's best to ride them with family or friends or both during the summer holidays. Treat them as a social occasion as much as a bike ride. Take your time and savour the scenery, the food along the way in the cafes and restaurants, the heritage sites, your fellow riders, the stunning scenery, and the green, green grass...

There are lots of shuttle operators, bike hire outfits and accommodation options and plenty of people to help you get organised. Start with the good people at www.haurakirailtrail.co.nz. If you book accommodation and services through them a 15% commission goes to the Trail Trust for maintenance - at no extra cost to you. The information centres in Thames, Te Aroha and Waihi are also good sources of information

Total distance is 77km, 48 miles, and makes a relaxing two or three day ride with plenty of time to take in the attractions. A good idea is to finish at Waihi and head to fabulous Waihi Beach to finish off with some coastal fun. If that doesn't appeal, finish in thermal town Te Aroha and freshen up with a spa.

The trail has two distinct parts...
1. Thames to Te Aroha through Paeroa, 54km
2. Paeroa to Waihi through the majestic Karangahake Gorge, 23km

Another section, a 56km coastal ride from Kopu to Kaiaua, is planned.

There is more information about the two existing parts in the 'subtrails' sections...
