Mountain Biking Four Mile Overlook
#1,036 of 1,426 mountain bike trails in Colorado
This trail starts off reasonably, but the second half has ridiculously steep hills that are too steep to climb in many places and too steep to let it rip on the scree on the downhills. The payoff and cost are really bad. Ultimately, I think the back half needs a lot of realignment work to make this trail worth riding. The potential is here though. The trail ends for mountain bikers at a gate/fence for Dome Rock State Wildlife Area, so it must be ridden as an out and back. Along with the realignments, someday the trail could also be extended NW just before it ends at the gate, and take it down a ridge and slope to hook back up with Rock Pond Trail (near the pond) to form a lariat. Until something like this is done, this is probably a trail to avoid.

Follow the main road (Wapiti Road) through the park west for 1.5 miles to the Visitor Center and Rock Pond Trailhead which are both on your left. Lots of parking available. The trailhead has been moved to is the back/southeast end of the lot (opposite the Visitor Center) with a little realignment of the beginning of the trail to accommodate the change. The trailhead is full of interesting information and displays of the region. Follow Rock Pond Trail 1.1 mi to its junction with Four Mile Overlook Trail.
The back half gets too steep for reasonable climbs and requires too much caution with the scree on the overly steep downhills. Realignments needed.
