Mountain Biking Badger Clark Historic Trail

*****   Add a review
#17 of 44 mountain bike trails in South Dakota
#4,441 in the world

At the trailhead you have a short climb to the cabin then go right. The trail is
well marked. This trail is is very short, yet very much like the others in the
park. Rocky, wavy, big climbs and big descents. You also have many tight
areas with rocks and pine trees. The trail is well taken care of and easier than
other is the park. It will give you a good short workout and is a good trail to
start on if you're looking for a short introduction of trails in Custer State Park.

Getting there
From Custer, take Highway 16A east to Custer State Park. Once in Custer
State Park, continue east on Highway 16A past 87 and after passing Legion
Lake look for CSP 9 (a road) and take it south. You will take CSP 9 about 0.5
miles south until you see the sign for Badger Clark and then take a right onto
the gravel road heading west. As you go down the road you will pass a cottage
then a little ways after that is a parking area. To the left is Centennial #89
trailhead and to the right is Badger Clark Historic Trail. Take your bike further
up the road and the trailhead starts to the right of the parking area and just to
the right of the cottage up on the hill.

As the only other reviewer stated, it is short, tight, tough, rocky, steep and a good intro to the types of trails in that area that are much longer. My son and I rode this on Saturday, August 3, 2013 as the first trail of our 9 day, 6 state, epic adventure through SD, ND, MT, WY and CO starting from KS. It was all of the above and a rough start as it had rained, then sleeted, then snowed the night/early morning before and we actually broke snow crust on the trail on AUGUST 3rd! In my opinion this is really a hiking trail. Advanced is the proper rating. We had some fun but not big fun on this trail. I understand that Centennial Trail nearby is a much better trail but even tougher.

Short trail but fun. Rocky, wavy with good flow. Big climbs and descents with tight rocky areas and tight between the pines. Well maintained and clean. Only a mile long, but worth the ride. Great trail to introduce you to trails in Custer State Park. Will give beginners a good workout. Sweet little trail.
