Pros: Perfect height for the smaller riders. Two different models. 6 speed and 21 speed.

Cons: Bars and stem are steel and heavy. SRAM Gripshift Tires are more for street than off-road

Recommendation: Once you change the Shimano SIS derailleur and grip-shift for rapid fire shifters, you'll have immediate improvement. Get a more aggressive knobby tire. Change out the handlebars and stem with aluminum. In time replace the bottom bracket with a cartridge bb. It will all last for a long time trouble free.

Model/Year: 2014

Pros: Lighter than most options, looks cool, doesn't have the useless suspension fork

Cons: Not the lightest

Recommendation: Fits my 7 year old. I'd buy another

Pros: Real bike

Cons: Grip shift

Recommendation: Awesome bike for kids if they are doing any trail riding. Frankly, steel bikes from big box stores are kinda cruel on the trail. Two boys, 7 and 10, riding 20" and 24" respectively. 24" ok over roots but 20" borderline. Gripshift a little hard to twist (I've found that hit and miss with different bikes). We're rocking 1 X 8 setup which I prefer. Bottom line, if you want your kids to enjoy mountain biking, to spark an interest, to develop a lifelong hobby you can do together, then this is a perfect bike to get started on.

Pros: "Real" mountain bike in a kid's size.
Decent components.
Excellent build quality.
Durable.

Cons: A little heavy.
Stock tires are good on pavement but pretty weak for serious off road.

Recommendation: We have two of these, one for each daughter. The bikes have held up extremely well and they look and work just like my Specialized Rockhopper.

My older daughter has rocked some pretty serious trails with hers, first on the 20" wheeled version and now the 24" one.

If you have kids who want to ride with you, do them a favor and get them a real bike. It makes a huge difference in their enjoyment level.
