The Boneyard Trails at Pinon Mesa near Farmington, New Mexico offer 15 miles of bike-legal singletrack with a distinct technical flavor that stands in sharp contrast to the otherwise fast and flowy riding Farmington is known for. The main lollipop ride measuring just over 13 miles takes you through desert arroyos and ridges packed with rock slabs, rock gardens, and short, steep climbs and descents — chunky, rocky terrain that's a radical departure from the norm.
The rocky rim traverses and small, chunky slabs are reminiscent of Moab, albeit with less vertical. Some of the steep, flowy descents on the Fossil Fuel trail bring to mind famous New Mexico trails like White Ridge. The terrain looks deceptively uninspiring at first, but climb up over a low rise and drop into the arroyos and you'll find entertaining, pedal-forward mountain biking that rewards technical riders.
The soil here is incredibly fragile — in places, the trail surface has been churned to sugar sand — making a fat bike the perfect tool for the job, though the trails are currently passable on a normal mountain bike. Class 1 e-bikes are officially welcome here, making the Boneyard the only trail in the region with that designation. If 15 miles isn't enough, unmarked moto trails and endless dirt roads in the surrounding area offer plenty of additional pedaling for those willing to explore.
