The Te Anau to Manapouri Trail follows the Waiau River (River Anduin to Lord of the Rings fans) from Lake Te Anau to Lake Manapouri.
The trail is designed for the casual cyclist and walkers so it's easy and wide, with a smooth surface. The many undulations are not steep. It's scenic with the forests and peaks of Fiordland National Park - a UNESCO world heritage area - to the west.
It makes for a really enjoyable spin as it meanders through pristine beech forest or out in the open along side the river. Take care not to run over any wondering hobbits. The forest, the riverscapes, the fiordland panoramas and the undulations will take your breath away. There are three or four toilets along the way.
At the time of writing - April 2017 - the trail had not been completed - but enough had been done for an out-and-back spin of 50km.
This trail has an excellent surface, very well controlled gradient, plenty of nice curves, and enough slope to keep you awake. Take your camera, some friends and a picnic for a mellow adventure with plenty of stunning scenery.
