I explored these two rides in one outing when I had some spare time in town. Nice scenery and rideable from downtown. The full trip report is at my blog below.

Dang, you really missed out. You could have added in a fantastic singletrack descent instead of going down 173 by dropping down the Cottonwood Trail: http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/cottonwood.html
Also, you could have added some singletrack to your climb, too, by climbing Frontside to Little Rattler to North Backbone instead of the pavement.
Next time, now you know 😀
