Need help getting off the fence with a decision about a new MTB.

I live in Los Angeles, and rode hardtails for years, starting in 1984. About 5 years ago I sold the MTB and started road biking, but now I want to get back on the MTB, but boy have things changed. Not only is there the HT vs FS decision, but the battle over wheel size with the 29r starting to give way to the 27.5. I’m mind f**king myself over the choices and unable to decide.

I’ve been looking and testing FS bikes lately: Yeti SB75, Specialized Evo, and Ibis Ripley. I still can’t make up my damn mind. I’m 53 years-old, and challenge myself mostly on long climbs or x-country rides. I do enjoy a fast descent and occasional single track.

Any thoughts out there on which way to go for a new MTB? Is the wheel size (29 or 27.5) that big of a deal, and is FS worth the extra cost? I’m looking to spend $3K – $5K. I know I risk about as many opinions as there are rides who respond, but that’s okay with me. If you’re familiar with my area in L.A., I mostly ride the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains.
