saw a light called night nemesis and was 2500 lumens couldn’t find a price then there was a nemesis with 1000 lumens…then i noticed a light online at walmart for 50 bucks with 1000 candlepower and found out that 1 candlepower is 12.57 lumens so the walmart light would be a better buy? what light is the cheapest and brightest for night mtb riding?

      First read this:

Lumens and and candlepower are not the same thing.

I’m currently reviewing a Lumintrek trailblazer light that I am really impressed with. Watch for an upcoming review of it on the blog. The 1000 lumens version goes for $90 on Amazon, which includes the helmet mount.

If you’re really on a shoestring, check out the various MagicShine variants on eBay.

Keep in mind that the eBay ones ship on the slow boat from China and have zero warranty.

I picked up a set of Magicshines from the now-defunct Geomangear last year post-battery recall. With both of them on (one helmet, one bars) I am pretty sure you could land a plane. I like them, but don’t have anything to compare them to. The batteries are pretty heavy, but I think that is common. They seem durable and, as I said, they are quite bright.

The batteries are pretty universal, the only difference is some pack 2 and some pack 4, but they are all basically these.

I appreciate all the good info posted here because I have been looking at getting into night riding with the short winter hours. My question is where should I mount a light when I get it? I was thinking about mounting it on the handlebars and then using a regular, 60 lumen, camping head lamp. Anyone have any advice on this?

Brighter light on the helmet to illuminate where you are looking, lesser light on the bars for ‘fill’ light for the trail in front of you.
