Cold weather gear

I rock tight sweats for a couple reasons,first one being they are cheap,second one being I’ve never looked for anything better.Not super tight but you don’t want the chainring to eat them.

I swear by the Pearl Izumi Elite Thermal tights with Chaomois. They are really great!

I wish I had Pearl tights, but I’ve got the Novara version.

I just wear cheap tights with my cycling shorts or cycling liner underneath. If weather is on the wet and muddy side I wear tights underneath some splash pants with velcro strapped around my leg to keep my pants out of the chainring.

I will wear my chamois under some next-to-skin layer (smartwool or patagonia stuff) then the shorts on top. My legs RARELY get cold so I layer more on the top.

I have Canari tights for down to the mid 30’s. For colder than that I have a couch and TV remote. 😆

I just wear my baggy cycle shorts with a long sleeve compression under my jersey. Also a mask and gloves. And I’m good with 30 degrees f.

cheap Wal-Mart under armor with my regular shorts and an old motorcycling jersey on top. So far has taken care of me to 40+. The breeze is a PITA, but if I have to decide between the wind and hundreds of dollars for more gear, I’m taking the wind.

When I ride in the winter I am an Under Armour advertisement. Swear by the stuff. Keeps me warm. Pants = $60, Long Sleeve = $60, Hood/Face Mask = $20, and Gloves = $40. Only thing that gets cold on me is my feel. May buy some slip covers soon. I started with some cheap Wal-Mart compression stuff but it doesn’t work near as good as the real stuff.

In the end it’s what ever works. I personally think that anything UA is way over priced, it’s become a trendy name and you’re paying for that. I use my kids as a gauge, if they start asking for it, I know it’s over priced. 😀

I know some have noted the temps they are dealing with, lets keep that trend going so we have a better idea if what you’re wear would work for temps others are riding in..

I have a couple of Under Armor base layer shirts with a long sleeve jersey. I have one pair of padded tights(brand unknown). I don’t do much cold. If it’s very cold I get my work out fighting with maddslaker over the remote. Virtual fight of course. 😆 😄 Later,

I do agree that UA stuff is way over priced but I have used the cheap stuff in 30 – 40 degree temps and it doesn’t work as well as UA. In a few years UA prices will drop once the trend goes onto another brand.

Does ua make any cycling specific gear? Seems like in my experience cycling gear beats out most other regular gear. Except for maybe ski gear. I’ve been experimenting with different pieces of ski gear for cold weather mountain biking and the helmets especially seem to work really well!

I don’t think UA makes any cycling specific gear. I had some bicycling tights with the pads but I guess I am weird because the pads bother me. It is more comfortable for me to not have pads in my crotch which is why I wear the Under Armor pants in winter.

You guys and all your "tights this, and under armour that" crack me up man I rock jeans (long johns if it’s real cold) a long sleeve shirt under a short sleeve shirt with a hoodie and I’m groovy usually by the first 2 miles my bloods pumping to where I’m burning up anyway I usually find myself shedding layers. If your one of those that sport the tights and other ballerina gear it’s cool with me I’ve learned judgement is for God and God alone….but that doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion 😆 😼 😆

Sounds to me like someone is compensating.

I sometimes use my UA tights over my Canari liner here in Michigan, and that was when it was 30-40 deg out. I just didn’t own a pair of tights. Then I saw that Nashbar was having a sale and I bought a pair of Mansfield Tights with Chamois for 24.99. Wow. Great bargain. I am thinking that I will get a second pair. Comfy, and not quite as warm as my UA tights, which was sometimes Too warm. A couple of weeks ago, I went for a morning Single Track ride, and it was 21 deg. I had on my Nashbar tights, Defeet wool socks, and I have an Icebreaker Long sleeve marino wool shirt I bought at Moosejaw, and my Zoic Jersey over top(for the MP3 Pocket) and a polartech fleece vest. Manzanella liner gloves under my Pearl Izumi’s, and a head beenie by The North Face under my helmet. I felt just about perfect. I don’t own any shoe or toe covers, so my toes were a little cold, but not bad considering the temps. It was cold enough that when I stopped for a drink, the water in my water bottle was frozen solid!! Great Ride.

Bought some Under Armour Coldgear tights from Academy Sports for 49$. Went to Dupont State Forest when it was about 30 degrees yesterday, and they were amazing. Even got them muddy and wet and they were fine. Not too hot, not too cold. Felt like normal legs. And they’re definitely cheaper than the Izumi’s I’ve looked at.

shorts for me… although i’ve got shinguard/kneepads that help alot. another thing i’ve discovered is that wearing plastic (ye olde cup) is a great idea not only for crash protection but, man, the wind can make things mighty cold down there without it!

I live in Western North Carolina and it has been so warm I’ve been riding in shorts…I am gearing up for the 12 hours at Tsali ride so i will be riding even when (if) the temp drops. Thanks all for the advice.
