Travel Recorder X from QStarz

Regular readers know I’m a nut when it comes to GPS and mountain bikes and these days it seems like more and more riders are catching the fever. The problem? Using a GPS on the trail and managing the resulting tsunami of data is still pretty complicated. That’s why I’m super impressed with the Travel Recorder X from QStarz - it’s GPS made simple.

Before I get into describing the Travel Recorder X, it’s important to talk about the competition. The latest GPS units from Garmin and others sport color touch screens and hundreds of menus and functions packed into a fairly bulky package that’s not really designed for mountain biking. The software included with these GPS units is generally just an afterthought and is often both limited and confusing at the same time. These GPS units are great if you’re looking for a multi-function solution or if you need navigation functionality but for most they are simply overkill.

If, however, you’re looking for a simple, reliable way to map trails and geo-tag photos along the way, the Travel Recorder X is your man. I have to admit that when I first opened the box I thought the Travel Recorder X was a joke - it looks just like a pager from the 1990s (minus any kind of display). The GPS has just one switch and a single button for marking waypoints and the first time I used it I wasn’t sure if the thing was even working. Still, I turned it on, tossed it into a webbed pocket on my Camelbak and rode. Back at the car, I switched the GPS off and forgot about it, not sure if it recorded anything at all.

Back at home I fired up the included software and after a few missteps installing the driver I was able to quickly download the data and to my surprise, I saw a Google Map with my exact route! The software even includes a track editor that lets you move and delete trackpoints and waypoints. You can split and merge tracks and even export your data to other formats (like GPX, KML, even HTML) for use in programs like TopoFusion and Google Earth. Seriously.

The really cool part about the included Travel Recorder software is that it makes geo-tagging and sharing photos simple. I tossed a directory of pics I snapped along the Kiwanis Fairgrounds trail into the program and it automatically placed the correct pics in the correct locations on the Google Map - done in less than 5 minutes. Sharing your geotagged pics and maps is simple too with the built in flickr, locr, and HTML export buttons (here’s a quick map I created). You can also use the Travel Recorder software to view things like speed and altitude data from you ride, among other things.

The Travel Recorder X can be paired with a PDA, smartphone, or laptop using the included Bluetooth connection which makes this little device even more versatile. Remember, there’s no screen on the device itself so if you want to use it for real time navigation you’ll need to pair it with a phone or computer. QStarz claims a 15 second satellite fix and the Travel Recorder X uses a built-in rechargeable battery. A USB and DC plug for the car are included.

If you’re still trying to wrap your head around the idea of a GPS without a screen, here’s an analogy: if the Garmin Colorado is an iPod Touch, the QStarz Travel Recorder X is an iPod Shuffle. While the Travel Recorder X may not be for everyone, it’s the best solution we’ve seen for simple mapping and geotagging photos on the trail. At just 2.2 ounces it’s also one of the lightest and most compact devices we’ve seen and includes some truly great software to boot. Pick yours up for less than a hundred bucks!

MTB News: Bike Rescue Team, More Women Biking, and Singletracks News

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

A sampler of MTB news from this week:

Bike rescue team rescues missing hikers: Yet another example of bikers helping hikers, this time in Manchester, NH. A group of 4 hikers became lost on Case Mountain this week during a thunderstorm and after alerting authorities of their situation via cell phone the bicycle rescue team found them within hours. Mountain bikes being used to help people? Who would’ve thought :)

Women are MTB’s fastest growing demographic: That’s good news, but what other demographics are we comparing? If we’re talking gender demographics it had to be men or women… At any rate, more and more women are discovering mountain biking every year and Whistler’s newsmagazine Pique has an in depth article about some of the women who put the men to shame at the MTB park. Good one to pass along to your wife or significant other…

The video contest is off to a strong start and it’s super close among the top contributors. There is still plenty of time left to get your video links in and don’t forget you also get points for rating or commenting on trail videos!

New MTB Photo Sharing Features

Friday, February 27th, 2009

You may have noticed some changes to the way we display trail photos here on singletracks over the past couple weeks and we’re finally ready to let you know (officially) what’s up. We’ve kept some things the same while improving and adding new photo features:

  • You can still upload trail photos the same way you always have. View a trail listing, click the “Add photos” link on the left and upload your pics. In addition to trail pics we’ve also added photos to mountain bike races and MTB gear review pages. Same deal - find the race/item, click the “Add photo” link and your pics will be linked to that page.
  • We simplified photo ratings and comments. Best photos rise to the top - simple as that.
  • Photo and thumbnail resolutions have been improved to show more detail. Sweet!
  • Improved ability to edit photo captions and delete your own photos.
  • Photo tagging is still available and the new system makes even greater use of tags (more on that later).
  • New photo category page shows thumbnails of the best pics and lists popular tags, new photos, and more.

So, why did we make these changes? For one thing, we felt like the old system was a bit too limited. Sure you could upload trail pics but what to do with pics of driveway jumps and sick bikes? The new photo system lets you categorize ANY type of MTB photo and there’s no limit to the number of pics you can submit (though we may have to remove photos that are inappropriate or completely unrelated to biking).

To organize all the new and old photos (nearly 13,000 pics!) we’re relying on your help. Members can tag any photo with descriptive phrases separated by commas. To those who are new to tagging, a brief example:

This is a photo I took at Santos last year so I tagged it like this: “santos, jump, drop, transition”. Notice the tags are separated by commas and describe a number of things in the photo (the location, the bike, the action). Now whenever anyone searches singletracks for photos of Transition bikes or Santos or jumps they’ll find this photo. Sweet, huh? Some magical tag searches to get you started: specialized bikes, bike art, 29ers, and freeride.

All the photos you upload (regardless of tagging) will show up in your personal photo album like the one below. Use related tags on the right to explore similar pics and to get an idea of which tags are most popular. Album photos are ordered by highest rated to lowest/unrated.

Other changes: photo contribution points have been re-scaled from 2 points per photo to 1 per photo to accommodate all the new content. Some trail photos may have been lost in the transition (less than 2% or so) and if you notice any specific weirdness use the “report a problem with this photo” link on the photo page to let us know. For general questions, feel free to post in the comments and we’ll respond directly.

Stay tuned for more news regarding the MTB photo system including upcoming contests and more…
