The World Cup of mountain biking season wrapped up this weekend with the final race in Austria where Julien Absalon (France) took first place, his fifth first place finish on the circuit. Absalon was crowned overall champion for the circuit meaning he’ll be wearing the rainbow jersey in 2009. If you recall Absalon also won gold in Beijing just last month – not a bad year for the mountain biker.

On the women’s side Marie-Hélène Prémont of Quebec, Canada took the bronze in Austria but that was enough to earn her the women’s world champion title.

In the Downhill event Rachel Atherton (Animal Commençal) won her race and the overall title while Sam Blenkinsop (Yeti) won this weekend’s race for the men and Greg Minnaar won the overall world cup title.

In 4-cross Alvarez Lara and Anneke Beerten were crowned world cup champs despite losing Saturday.

Sadly the Americans were shut out from any big titles on this year’s UCI Mountain Bike circuit – guess that means I’ll cheer for the Canadians instead.
