The Zero 29 aluminum hardtail takes a somewhat cleaner aesthetic approach to the two-triangle format. With its the equally pitched top tube and seat stays, internal cable and hose routing, and smooth “stack of dimes” welds, this German made trail bike is a looker.
The Zero 29 frame is available in sizes medium, large, and X-large, though based on the reach numbers the size run could potentially be clicked down by one notch. The medium has a shorter reach of 432mm, while the large makes a stretch that we typically see on medium-size bikes of 455mm, and the XL is also shorter compared to similar bikes at 480mm. In a somewhat older-school style, the frame’s seat tube length is likely what’s determining sizing for the Zero 29, with a 430mm, 450mm, and 470mm measurements respectively. In short, shorter and taller riders may want to take a peek at the geometry table before ordering, since the sizing doesn’t exactly follow the trend for “hardcore hardtails.”
With a slack 64° headtube angle and ascent-happy 78° seat tube angle that will only grow steeper with sag, folks who fit well on these frames should have a blast rolling up and down the mountain. All three sizes are built with 435mm chainstays to help get the bike off the ground, and the shorter 1200mm – 1256mm wheelbase should make it rather playful on the right trails. Lastly, the whopping 70mm of bottom bracket drop is double that of some similar bikes and should create a cozy “in the bike” sensation while you watch out for pedal strikes.
The frame comes with a rear axle, a spare derailleur hanger, and frame plugs to hold the cables and hoses tightly, all for €979. Upon ordering, you can choose between a Marzocchi Bomber Z2 or Fox 34 Factory fork, a SRAM GX or X01 Eagle drivetrain, and Stans Flow EX3 or Acros ED Race Carbon wheels, with a prices ranging between €2,929 and €4,149. The remaining stock build includes a set of Magura MT5 brakes with 180mm rotors, an Acros 40mm stem and 780mm handlebar, and a BikeYoke Divine dropper.
