Trail Description
About this trail
Mountain biking is allowed on the Western Okataina Walkway. The trail follows an old logging road so it's still well benched and generally not too steep. It goes through some nice regenerating native forest and some cleared areas where there is grass, gorse and blackberry. You get occasional views of Lake Okataina from the main track and 360 views if you take the side track up to Rangitoto Peak, 758 metres.

The track is quite rutted in places, sometimes steep, littered with mud puddles after rain, but usually well benched and reasonably wide; seldom treacherous. It's not a very popular walk, perhaps because of the need for a shuttle but you are likely to meet walkers at the Okataina Road end as the walk up to the trig is quite popular.

Ride the trail out-and-back for a good 34km workout or arrange a shuttle to pick you up at the Okataina Education Centre on Okataina Road for a nice 17km ride. It can be ridden both ways but best to start at Millar Road for a great downhill finish at Okataina Road.

Review: The trail was in need of some love and attention when I rode it with encroaching grass and gorse in places.
