Tollgate Trail
The Tollgate Trail is Mt. Hough's newest top-to-bottom shuttle run, spanning 10 miles and dropping over 3,500 vertical feet from summit to base. This continuous descent — the third complete shuttle route on the mountain — connects the Upper Tollgate segment (a 3.7-mile section that drops over 1,100 vertical feet) to the existing Middle and Lower Tollgate trails, eventually dumping out at the base of the mountain near the train tracks.
Tollgate sits between the classic Mt. Hough trail and Indian Falls Ridge in terms of difficulty, earning an intermediate rating despite being more mountain bike-specific than other routes on the mountain. The trail features rock rolls, tech sections, rocky segments, and really uses the contours of the land to create a more playful riding experience. It's got some more mountain bike-specific features than the flowy and fast Hough trail, with undulations and features that make it more engaging for mountain bikers while still remaining accessible to intermediate riders.
As a multi-use trail shared with motos, e-bikes are allowed on Tollgate, and the multi-directional nature means it's not considered a true downhill mountain bike trail. However, the mountain bike-specific features and playful character set it apart from the other routes on Mt. Hough. These aren't DH shuttle laps where you're down in 20 minutes — it's still a big ride that will keep you out there for several hours, even with a shuttle drop to the top.
