Sky Tavern Bike Park sits on 143 acres of City of Reno land near Lake Tahoe, offering 700 vertical feet of riding across approximately 10 miles of singletrack. Built by Momentum Trail Concepts' Steve Wentz using sustainable construction methods, the trail system features ten downhill runs ranging from green to double black diamond. While not originally designed as an integrated network, the trails interconnect naturally, allowing riders to piece together their own descents from summit to base. The park also includes a pump track, Strider bike track, youth skills zone, and progression skills zone.
The challenging decomposing granite soil required innovative building techniques—Wentz used a larger excavator with a five-foot track width to compact the soil properly and designed the trails to eliminate the need for drains. This approach created sustainable trails that require minimal maintenance. Four trails (High Five, Rick Sutherland, Easy Up, and Alleygator) feature adaptive-friendly options, making the bike park accessible to riders of all abilities.
Sky Tavern operates as a free, donation-based facility that mirrors its 75-year commitment to making winter sports accessible to everyone. The park will add shuttle service in 2026, with the Forest Service fast-tracking the required permit. Future expansion plans include adding more intermediate and advanced trail options to help riders progress through a spectrum of difficulty levels, plus additional features for developing faster decision-making skills on the bike.
