Chattahoochee Bend State Park currently offers about 6.5 miles of mountain bike trail, but MTB Atlanta is about to transform this Metro Atlanta state park into a legitimate riding destination. Almost 10 miles of new singletrack will be built across two new trails—the Copperhead and the Rattler—bringing the network to nearly 17 miles of riding. Currently, the park features four short trails including the Black Racer (¾ mile), Hognose (½ mile), Coachwhip (½ mile), and Rough Green (¼ mile), which follow old roadbeds and offer relatively flat, slightly technical riding with uphill and downhill turns.
The new Copperhead trail will deliver a backcountry riding experience through "one of the prettiest parts of the park," while the Rattler loop "will be the first purpose-built, bike-optimized trail on State Park land" in Georgia. These additions represent a significant upgrade from the legacy volunteer-built hiking trail system that currently exists. With MTB Atlanta eventually hoping to build some 40 miles of singletrack in the park—with ~20 miles currently approved and discussions underway for another 20—Chattahoochee Bend is poised to become a major player in Georgia's mountain biking scene.
With superb campgrounds already in place, the construction of these new trails could transform Chattahoochee Bend into a regional weekend destination. While people already camp at the park regularly, there hasn't been much for them to do beyond floating about six miles of river. Once these two new loops are complete and the network reaches 16 to 20 miles of trail, the park is positioned to see a massive spike in visitation from mountain bikers looking for a quality overnight riding experience within easy reach of Atlanta.
