Great nature trail. The trail is double track/fireroad with no singletrack. Very arduous first mile then rolling hills. Hardly anyone around.

Santa Ysabel Open Space preserve used to be cattle ranches. Though acquired by the government for preservation, cattle are still grazed there. The trails are old ranch roads and very steep in places (greater than 20%); though the steep sections are usually short. Except for the first mile from the west end of the preserve; which is near 15% average grade---argh. The western half of the preserve winds through forest of California Live Oak. On the east side, Kanaka Flat is a grassland plateau. Riding the preserve is a great work out, with pleasant views of the surrounding lands. And famous Julian apple pie just a few miles distance from trail's end.
