This weekend the Kona 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo mountain bike race will be held in Arizona and more than 3,000 participants and spectators are expected to attend. The race organizer claims this is the largest 24-hour mountain bike race in America with the ’solo’ racing category hosting 200 competitors alone. If anyone is planning on racing this weekend we’d love to see your pics!

Also in the news, Ripon College in Wisconsin is offering free Trek 820 mountain bikes to all incoming freshmen students who choose to leave their cars at home. It’s all part of a plan to reduce the parking crunch at the small campus and to encourage a cycling culture within the student body. Alumni donated more than $60,000 to fund the program and sponsors like Trek have stepped up to make sure the 200 bikes are available this fall. Perhaps other colleges will follow suit? I know my alma mater got some press a few years back for giving iPods to all incoming freshmen - too bad they didn’t spend that money on bikes instead!
