Opinion: Wet Weather Racing and Trail Protection Policies

Mountain bike racing is a ton of fun: it’s one of many great aspects of our sport. Races offer a chance to line up against your buddies, or strangers, and see how you stack up.  They’re an opportunity to push yourself harder and further than you ever have before, and have a little support while doing so. Even if you’re not that good at it, like me, racing can still be fun.

Races can do great things for the trails as well. They draw people to the venues, and pre-race work parties get the trails in pristine condition. Most of the time racing is a win-win situation for everyone involved: land managers and race promoters make some money, and people travel to visit the area and spend money in restaurants, local bike shops, hotels, etc.  Folks get a chance to have some good fun, push themselves, make memories that last a lifetime, and the trail is usually better off after a race than before.

Unless Mother Nature conspires against us, that is. When that happens, someone will be left floating down the proverbial creek without a paddle… and that’s exactly what happened to one of my local trails recently.

An XTERRA event was held at Hickory Knob State Park (HKSP) on March 24, 2013.  It rained hard the day before the event and during most of the race as well.  Much of the trail was actually under water during the race.

Bottom line: the race should not have been held on that trail in those conditions. The weekend after the event, several of our local SORBA-CSRA members went to assess the damage, and reports were grim. Michael Drawdy, a long time trail steward and volunteer (who has spent many hours cutting downed trees off the trails at HKSP) said this:

“This trail is absolutely crushed. Foot after foot, yard after yard. This trail does not exist as it did a month or so ago. It will take more hours to bring it back than the majority of people are willing to volunteer.”

The trail was so badly damaged the park closed it until it could be repaired.  Of course, the park doesn’t have the manpower or budget to repair the trail themselves, so the work will be left to volunteers. SORBA-CSRA members originally estimated it would take approximately 400 man hours to repair the damage, but a professional trail builder put the estimate closer to 800-1,000 hours.

Since the race promoter wasn’t local to our area, it made the situation that much worse.  Most local mountain bikers were left feeling like we’d been ransacked and taken advantage of.  It seemed like the XTERRA race organizers had come to our area, made some money, and left, leaving the trail destroyed with no intention to fix it. Local riders, who had spent years building and maintaining this trail, were understandably angry.

Pointing Fingers

Let me make one thing clear: I didn’t write this article to point fingers, place blame, or trash talk anyone involved in the HKSP XTERRA event.  It’s simply one example of a race that shouldn’t have happened, and it’s one I’m familiar with.  This isn’t the first time a trail has been damaged by a race in inclement weather, and I know it won’t be the last.

Instead, I wrote this article to discuss race policy and trail protection from various points of view, so we can all understand the viewpoints of the different parties involved, including land managers, racers, promoters, and local trail work volunteers.  Hopefully, this article will also serve to help educate some folks as to when and why a race shouldn’t take place on a trail, so in the future fewer trails will be destroyed and closed because of a race.

When A Trail Shouldn’t Be Used

A trail should not be used (whether for a race or some other event) when doing so will result in an unacceptable level of damage. 

First, you have to consider the trail surface.  Rocky and sandy trails handle rain better than flat, low-lying, and clay-based trails. The famous Snake Creek Gap Time Trials, for example, are held regardless of weather: rain, snow, sleet, it doesn’t matter.  As long as the shuttles can get the racers to the start lines, it’s on. For that trail system, it works. That section of the Pinhoti is famous for its rocks, and even the non-rocky sections are still pretty rocky, so the trail can handle lots of riders even when soaked.  Sure, there are a few mud holes here and there, and the doubletrack can be super muddy, but the vast majority of the singletrack is so rocky it’s virtually weather proof.

The type of event must also be considered.  How many racers are competing, and how many times will they traverse the trail? Is it a single loop or point-to-point, where everyone rides the trail one time, or is it a 12-hour race were riders do as many laps as possible around an 8-mile loop?  The first type of race may be okay to run in the pouring rain, but the second style might not be okay if the trail is even slightly damp from rain several days prior to the event.

These factors need to considered early in the planning stages before announcing the race.  For instance, don’t plan a 24hr race on an 8-mile loop with a lot of clay-based soil during the wettest month of the year. You can see how that’d be poor planning, right?

Damage: How Much is Too Much

Earlier I used the phrase “an unacceptable level of damage.”  Exactly what that definition means will vary from trail-to-trail and event-to-event.

When a person plans an event, they should consider how much of the trail will be damaged, how much effort will be required to repair it, and if it’s worth it. A few mud holes scattered throughout the trail system usually isn’t a big concern, whereas rutting up the entire trail is a problem.

The significance of the event itself must also be considered.  A local week-night race series simply isn’t important in the grand scheme of things: only local riders are competing and there aren’t any big sponsors or real titles at stake. Such a race is easy to reschedule if the weather will be nasty, and it’s not worth ruining a trail over.

But what about a bigger event, that may be part of a national or regional series, where many racers are traveling to the event, often from all over the country or world? Then, it gets more complicated. There’s a lot more at stake.  Rescheduling simply may not be an option: too many people, organizations, titles, and dollars are involved.

Anytime a race shouldn’t happen, there needs to be a Plan B.

  1. Frustrating. I can see both sides (promoters vs. trail advocates) and it’s tricky.

    What if trail managers simply required promoters to post a bond before the race equal to the amount it would cost to repair the trail in the event of damage, sorta like a security deposit? Promoters could then weigh whether they want to cancel the race or not based on the $$ they have at stake.

    • For that to work the land manager would need to require enough of a deposit to actually do some repair work, but most promoters aren’t going to have that kind of dough. The trail builder who assessed the HKSP gave the park manager a number, what it would cost to have professionals come in and fix the loop, and the manager nearly fell out of his chair. I don’t remember the number, but I’ll ask around and get it. It isn’t cheap.

      • I mean, if it’s 1000 hours to fix and you figure $15 an hour for paid laborers, that’s $15K to fix. That’s certainly a big chunk of change and out of the range of most promoters.

        So maybe it’s not a security deposit situation but more of a bail bond style where you pay 10% of the max cost to fix but you’re still on the line for the full amount in the worst case scenario.

        I just feel like people tend to make more rational decisions when all the costs are known up front (the organizers, the land managers, the racers, etc.).

      • Yep, I heard the builder said it would be $15k-$20k, I’m not sure if that was to repair the entire loop or just the really bad sections that will require a machine and can’t be done by volunteers.

  2. Good point, dgaddis, on having a plan B: racers still racing, organizers got money, trail remain in the same condition.
    Many race events support trails. Sad to see HKSP in such a condition though.

  3. Just to put a little perspective on how much rain, Saturday night to Sunday noon there was over two inches of rain with a previous 3.5 inches earlier in the week. McCormick county and neighboring counties were in a flood watch.

  4. Another aspect that has to be taken into account is the damage to mountain biking as a whole; anti-bike forces will point to the trail damage from such an event as being typical of the type of damage bikes do as well as being indicative of the lack of concern the mountain biking community at large have for the trails they use. This has potentially disastrous implications for trail access beyond just the specific trail in question.

    Just another argument for the existence of a solid Plan B.

  5. Tom Sauret, Regional IMBA/SORBA Director, was at our monthly meeting last week, and if anything good has come out of this, it has forced conversation and evaluation among interested parties. Keep pushing down there, people are talking. Its been an interesting reading following this story on the social media.

    • SORBA already has/had a policy in place for any of it’s chapters that host an event. (they had one before joining with IMBA, I assume it’s still in place, but I’m not positive) But I don’t think any chapters (besides my own) actually follow it. I don’t recall ever reading of a rain date for any other event in the southeast. This is/was the SORBA policy:

      All SORBA events for which a fee is charged must have an alternate route plan, rain date, cancellation, and refund policy stated on all advertising. If the weather is so bad that even the alternative route is not usable, then event must be postponed or canceled. Environmental protection and the public image of the sport must always come first. If cancellation is the only option, refunds of entry fees may not be possible. An organizer should be sensitive to trail conditions 72 hours before an event. If conditions are poor and it appears they will not improve, then the event should be postponed or cancelled. Cancellation or postponement must be announced on http://www.sorba.org and every effort to communicate the event change will be undertaken by the organizer. If weather conditions change within the 72 hour window, then the organizer must decide if the event can go forward taking into consideration the trail conditions. Changing the route to make use of roads and to move the event off fragile trail surfaces must be an alternative when possible. After an event begins under good circumstances, but conditions worsen, the organizer should shorten the event to limit impact when possible. The organizer is expected to balance the benefits to SORBA when making a decision to run an event. The trail, the mountain biker, and the reputation of SORBA must all be weighed when making this decision.

  6. This is such a crappy situation on so many fronts, made even worse by the fact that the promoter isn’t involved in the maintenance or building of these trails in any way.

    On a local note, Eddie O’dea organizers the Fools Gold 50/100 on my local trails of Bull Mountain, and it is really the only MTB race held here every year. While he doesn’t live in the area and might not be able to just throw money at the trails, he does volunteer his own time at trail work days to help build and maintain these trails.

    So in regards to the bail bond, if race organizers were at least required to do work on the local trails, that might be something too. Even if the organizer travels from a long ways away, they can arrive a few days early to build reroutes, do trail work, etc. I’ve heard of that done at other trail systems.

I can certainly see both sides of this as well but couldn’t the trail system just have the organizer agree to leave the trail in the same or relatively same condition when they are done as they found it in. Whether that would involve some return of deposit or just honor I am not sure. The trail could still get burned but the organizer would also not be invited back to that trail and b. have a bad reputation causing other trail systems to be squeamish about allowing them to go there. c. even if nobody gets squeamish about inviting them in after the get new trails get burned eventually they will not have any trails to turn to.
    I realize that the damage here was not discovered for a week so some logistics would have to be worked out but they could still be responsible for repairing the trail to pre race conditions one way or another through manpower, money, or both. Plus, if they have a signed contract the trail would have some legal leverage to use against them. I am not a sue happy guy (I honestly hate the whole idea most of the time) but the trail did suffer a catastrophic loss here and somebody has to pay for it. Hopefully it would not even come close to that point but just the threat would carry weight and I think if other trails new that an organizer was involved in some litigation over trail damage may think twice before opening up their trail system.
