Epic mountain bike race

posted February 21, 2007 by trek7k

The Absa Cape Epic is easily the most extreme mountain bike stage race in the world. The race takes place in South Africa and runs almost 900 km (about 600 miles) with 16,000 meters (52,000 feet) of climbing over 8 grueling days. This year’s race kicks off on March 24.

I had never heard of the race but apparently it is the most televised mountain bike race of all time (more than 3,500 hours broadcast). Not sure if this is being shown in the States but I’m sure we can keep track on the official race website. This year’s field is composed of more than 1,000 riders including Olympic medalists and World Cup winners.

I’m really stoked to see coverage of this race and we’ve even added a section for mountain bike trails in South Africa to singletracks. Seems like a gnarly place to ride, especially since when it’s winter here, it’s summer down there. Road trip anyone?
