ProsTrek quality, low price, fairly light weight, handles good.
VerdictI've had my 3900 for 4 years, and ride mainly moderate/intermediate trails. It handles roots, embeded rocks, sandy, gravel, and hardpack well. I ride once or twice a week and my rides are anywhere from 5 to 10 miles. I consider myself a recreational rider. I did put better tires on it and replaced the plastic pedals with clipless. I also changed the seat to something more comfortable. I wouldn't consider this a flaw but just personal preference. I would recommend this bike to anyone who's just starting in mountain biking and doesn't want to spend or can't afford to spend a grand or more on a bike. Especially for those who want to ride on dirt, but aren't going to do rock gardens or downhill.

ProsTrek quality. Low price. Shimano parts. Trek warranty
ConsBit heavy. Lower end components.
VerdictI bought this bike for a 11 year old so he could keep up with everyone. I didn't want to spend high dollar on a bike he would out grow fast and a "Walmart" bike wasn't going to cut it. Great bike for someone who just wants to ride but isn't commited to serious riding. The bike has handled everytjing my others have with the only breakdowns being flat tires (kid is thorn magnet).

ProsGreat feel, shifts smooth, front fork feels nice over semi-rough terrain.
ConsNothing so far.
VerdictI bought this bike last weekend and finally got to ride it for a good while last night on some trails. I am new to MTB, but I used to BMX, so it's coming back quickly. I compared this with the GF Tarpon and liked this one a little better due to slightly better components. This is a great bike for new riders, and also a good bike for those who don't ever see themselves ramping off 20 foot jumps. ;)
