Description: The New River Trail State Park is a very senic ride on an old abandon railroad bed. It is a smooth hard packed surface which is great for a leisure ride. The grade is only 1 to 2 percent and is slightly downhill ride if you start in Galax. The trail follows the senic Chestnut Creek and then the New River which is one of the oldest rivers in the world. There are 2 tunnels and a water fall and many bridge crossings over the river and creek. Great ride for the family anytime of the year and it is incredible in the fall with the fall colors.

Very easy and good for beginners. Can somewhat be crowded on weekends.

I'm new to Mountain Biking, so until I start hitting real MTB trails, I'm just building my endurance on these rails-to-trails types, and this is one of the best. I was impressed by the number of stops (bathrooms, benches or stores) along the route. The tunnel is a nice surprise, and the little waterfall at Chestnut Creek is a definite stop. I traveled from Galax to Fries and back. Last half of my trip was in the dark without a light, its a safe trail, just barking dogs. The trip back to Galax is more uphill, which hurt since I was pretty tired on the way back trying to beat darkness. A better place to start would have been at the junction of I-77/I-81 near Shot Tower, there's a better waterfall there. Plan to pitch a tent in one of the camping areas so I can ride the whole trail over a couple of days.

This trail starts in Galax, VA and ends in Pulaski, VA. It runs along an abandoned rail line and has very small grade changes but when riding for 50 miles it will seem like you are going up hill all the time. This is a very senic ride and great to take the family along. It has many different entry and exit location with restrooms and a few stores to stop and browse through. I have ridden from Galax to Foster Falls and back once and From Foster falls to Pulaski once. I plan to ride the entire 102 miles out and back this fall. I will need some but creme for that ride for sure.

Great smooth trail for the beginner or the any rider looking to enjoy the view. Follows the New river. Its so level that it appears your going slightly up hill both ways.
