Mountain Biking Colorado, Red, Hay, Blair Witch Loop

*****   Add a review
#198 of 1,368 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#1,522 in the world

From the car park on Revette Drive cross the road and pick up the Colorado Trail as it crosses a little bridge, goes round the pond past houses and starts climbing steeply up the hill with some sharp switch-backs. Soon you're in forest - Lodge Pole pines I think - and the climbing becomes more gentle. After about 6 miles of very pleasant riding along the Colorado Trail take the Red Trail fork. You won't miss the sign - all the signs on this loop are good. Red Trail sidles round a hill above Soda Creek then slopes down through the pine trees of Roosevelt National Forest to Keystone Ranch (a reception center for weddings etc.). Swing sharp left and ride past the ranch house (normally unoccupied) and climb up through the forest on Hay Trail. It's climbs about 300 feet till it meets the Blair Witch Trail which meanders up through the forest for another mile and a half till it meets the Colorado Trail to complete the loop. From there it's two and a half miles and a net descent of about 600 feet back to Revette Drive.

This loop samples the Colorado Trail and three other similar back country trails ranging in altitude from 9200 to 10,100 feet. There are panoramic views over to the mountains to the west of Breckenridge. You will feel the serenity of the back-country and the satisfaction of a good undulating 14 mile ride. These are pleasant trails and this loop is one of the better Breckenridge rides.
