Description: The trail takes you toward the top of Atalaya Mountain, a 9,121-foot peak. The first few miles of the trail are
relatively easy, but it becomes increasingly steep and strenuous as you near the summit. Plan on carrying your bike
a good bit of the way, but the view is worth it! Once at the top, you can come back down the way you came or
keep going north to join in with the Dale Ball South trail network.

1700 vert of elevation gain in 2.3 miles! Ouch! Most will walk a good amount and all will walk some. For the strong climber or one who doesn't mind a little hike-a-bike, it's well worth it though. Much of the trail is entertaining despite the grade and the scenery is wonderful. And then you get to reap the reward of all that sweat you put into getting up--the downhill is a real hoot! Go at an off-peak time if you can. You can also hook up with the Dale Ball trails to extend your mileage and turn this into a real epic ride.

Similar Trail: Dale Ball Central or North if you want some sweet singletrack without the brutal climb.

This is a great hiking trail, but as a mountain biking trail I don't see the point. It's steep, rocky, and has a fair number of hikers on it. Carry the bike so you can see the views? Why bother with the bike? Really, Santa Fe has some great mountain biking trails, like the Dale Ball Trails (I know, Atalaya trail is one of these, but the others work better), Wisdsor trail,...

It just keeps getting steeper and steeper! Glad I was on a light hardtail for the times I had to shoulder the bike to climb because it was too hard to push the bike uphill. The view made it worth it, and I continued north to Dale Ball South for some more rideable riding.
