Officials in Australia are cracking down on illegal mountain bike trails constructed within state forests and nature preserves with increased patrols and fines from $75 to $750. The EPA in Australia says they found large jumps constructed of trees and vegetation in the Samford Forest Reserve with one jump requiring more than 2 hours to demolish using a machine. Sounds pretty massive, eh?

No matter where you live and ride, it’s never a good idea to construct illegal trails. What makes this case even worse is that it sounds like the builders cut down trees to construct the ramps rather than using boards or scrap lumber. The guys who built the jumps in Samford better hope they aren’t caught – I imagine there are a number of folks who’d like to make an example of them.
