Description
This is a network of multiuse trails that can link up to Happy Jack. There is singletrack, doubletrack and fire roads. This network includes the Turtle Rock trail, a popular 3 mile loop. There are rocky technical sections, huge rock formations, and great views. There is a trail off of Turtle Rock loop linking to Rd 700DA that goes to Devils Playground area and others that have more trails, including double black diamonds. The Pedal House (307-742-5533) or Fine Edge Ski, Sport and Cycle (307-745-4499) are bike shops in Laramie. If there aren't trail maps, you can get them at Headquarters at Happy Jack just north up I-80 or from the Pedal House.

Review: 08.05.2012 Great fun. Plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Little hops, tight squeezes, roots, flat rock, smooth dirt, twisty corners. Quite a few hikers/climbers close to the parking lot. If you like to boulder or climb bring your rock shoes. $5 day use fee or seasonal pass required.

Review: Two laps on Turtle Rock in the rain at dusk was a hoot.

Similar Trail: Similar to the mellower sections of Gowdy.

Review: Nice beginner trail. Lots of fun. This is a loop with a couple of off-shoots. We went up and camped in the nearby public space. It sprinkled a bit that night, but the trail was fine. Some rock formations, but mostly pebbly. No major climbs. There are a few really fun sections that have some rock-riding (I flopped over in some cactus at one point), but these sections are fairly short.

Review: I don't mind getting my feet wet or coming out of a ride dirty but this trail was the worst one I've ridden. Tried to come in with the map and usually pretty good about route finding but a lot of trails either were not visible by any means or were in the swamp. We ended up back on the highway 5 miles up the road but not before riding through the most cow patty's I've ever had the displeasure of seeing. Maybe it would've been better with someone familiar with the area but Happy Jack was much funner and worth the effort.

Review: Start with a map and find your entry point--all are equally good (or bad, depending on your perspective). There's almost unlimited mileage in here, but most of it is doubletrack, none of it is particularly entertaining, and then there's the cattle (which means hoofprints and cowpies). Some areas can be marshy and the trail disappears--don't venture here if you don't like getting your feet muddy. Only recommended if you want to get semi-lost and rack up a lot of mileage.

Review: Turtle Rock is Waaay fun. Unfortunately, it's only 2.5 miles. Be ready to share the trail with hiking families and dogs. The rest of the network in the Devil's Playground area is far less entertaining. For more great singletrack, head up to the Headquarters Trail/Happy Jack area.

Review: During my first ride here I rode (according to the map proviced by the Pedal House) the main road to Turtle Rock -> Damn Trail -> Race Loop -> Devils Slide -> Cow Trail -> Damn Trail -> Turtle Rock -> Return. This being April, I rode in early morning while ground was still frozen to avoid tearing up the trail. Nice network of trails. Besides a few decent climbs, there was nothing overly technical except for the creek crossings. Good variety for all skill levels, including roads. Great views of Sherman Granite outcrops. There are many more trails in this network that I will explore. Turtle Rock is a good warmup for the rest of the network, but can be busy with hikers. Other than Turtle Rock, other trials were not marked, so bring a map. Its pretty hard to get lost though because of the topography. The rescue factor on trails other than Turtle Rock may be low.
