If you are looking for a good 2 hour ride with some terrain changes and a beautiful fast ride through a lush bottom-forest you ought to ride the full loop. There are some washout areas due to the recent storms but I'm finding that the case most everywhere. Its a great place if you have a kid or novice just learning, or you can wind the rubberband a bit tighter and ride hard for a pretty good workout with georgeous scenery.

I've ridden Southside twice... once in 2004 & today. I can't speak to what amount of maintenance has taken place at Southside as of recent but it does seem to be in need of a little TLC. In all fairness there have been quite a few storms in the area lately & as a result there were a few blow downs & lots of debris on the main loop. Also trail erosion seems to be becoming a bit of a problem in a few areas. If many roots & ruts are not your thing you may find yourself a bit frustrated w/ the ride, however I don't mind them so much even when riding my fully rigid MTB. This trail could be really awesome if some locals would address these issues. However, in spite of some needed maintenance my son & I still enjoyed our time on the trail! There are a few nice ravines & drops to play on & the section of trail that runs in the floodplain was fast & flat w/ beautiful greenery by way of ferns & the like. There were also quite a few nice spots to take a break by the creek & to take in the scenery. Overall I rate SS a three but w/ a little TLC this place could easily be a 4+!

I certainly consider myself a capable and true mtbr! I rode this trail yesterday and loved it. NO there aren't jumps and berms but you can't say someone that isn't a mountain biker could ride it. Good mix I thought. Pretty fast in places, climbs not long, fun stuff for an old-fart x-country rider.

Great trail. Well marked and maintained. Idaho section technical, rest of loop challenging but not too difficult. Rode in wet conditions today and trail was challenging. Bonus - showers available

Similar Trail: Similar to Harbison though not as many climbs as Hrbison

This is a cross-post since Southside is also listed under it's other alias: Tour de Dump. Gotta admit I'm surprised at the bad review below. Sounds more like a $2 complaint. Anyway, I've got to say that Southside is one of my favorite trails even though I'm quite bored with it; I'm only 15 minutes away, so it's by far the most convenient. I've ridden Catawba Riverfront, Francis Beatty, North Mecklenberg, Renassaince Park, Beech Spring ( all near Charlotte ), Pee Wee's, Lynche's Woods, Bent Creek, and a small handfull in TN, WVa, Va, and AR. I guess I've ridden about 25 different trails. So, I can say that Southside ( de Dump ) has some of the most fun, challenging, and varied trails in the area. I don't know why some say it's boring. Perhaps they only rode down near the creek. That section has some sandy parts but the total length of deep sand is maybe 70 yards. Last, ALL SC trails and parks charge two bucks now! Just buy an annual SC pass for about $50.
